Shipping Rate Changes for Major Carriers in 2022

Shipping rate changes have been announced by several major carriers for 2022. These shipping changes may or may not affect your shipping budget and strategy for your ecommerce business.

We’ve pulled together a list of announced shipping rate changes broken down by major carriers so you can stay in the know and prepare your shipping budget.

FedEx

Effective January 3, 2022

  • FedEx Express shipping rates will increase on average of 5.9% for US domestic, US export, and US import services.
  • FedEx Ground and FedEx Home Delivery shipping rates will also increase on average of 5.9%.
  • FedEx Ground Economy (formerly FedEx SmartPost) will increase on average of 6.9%.

Additionally, FedEx is making changes across other areas as well. Some have already taken effect.

Effective November 1, 2021

  • A fuel surcharge increase will be applied to FedEx Express (domestic package and freight services), FedEx Ground, and FedEx Freight shipments beginning Nov. 1, 2021.

Effective January 17, 2022

  • FedEx Freight will introduce a No Shipment Tendered surcharge that applies when a pickup is performed and no shipment is tendered to the carrier.

Effective January 17, 2022

  • The International Out-of-Delivery-Area Surcharge and International Out-of-Pickup-Area Surcharge rates will be determined based on the corresponding tier of the ZIP code, postal code, or city of the shipment’s origin and/or destination location for International Express Freight and Parcel services.

Effective January 17, 2022

  • Delivery and Returns Surcharge will be assessed on packages that are delivered or returned using FedEx Ground Economy services.

Effective January 24, 2022

  • Additional Handling Surcharge and Oversize Charge rates for U.S. Express Package Services and U.S. Ground Services will be determined based on the shipment’s zone.

USPS

Shipping Services Effective January 9, 2022

Effective January 9, 2022, USPS has increased Shipping Services product prices by approximately 3.1%. See shipping rate changes below:

    • Priority Mail Express will increase by 3.1% in 2022

    • Priority Mail Service will increase by 3.1% in 2022

Mail Services increases for 2022 have not yet been announced.

UPS

Effective December 26, 2021

UPS announced that as of December 26, 2021, rates will increase by an average of 5.9%.

  • UPS® Ground, UPS Air, and International services are going to see an increase of an average of 5.9%

Find the increased rates for certain Value-Added services and Other Charges here. If you currently use rates provided by Shopify Shipping, these UPS increased rates will not apply.

Effective January 9, 2022

  • Certain ZIP codes for which area surcharges apply will change

  • “Peak Surcharges” will be renamed to “Peak/Demand Surcharges”

Reviewing Your Shipping Strategy

With these shipping rate changes in mind, it might be time to adjust your shipping strategy. Handling surcharges are set to increase for large and bulky packages, so make sure to measure your packages in order to be prepared for any rate hikes.
